Christies Auction 06-18-1998

My interest in the Blade Runner License plates began after I spotted a plate in a Christies Auction catalog several years ago. Before that I was unaware that there were license plates.

Now that I look back and carefully review the film, I can see several plates. One on the front of the Police Sedan as it pulls out in front of Pris, who is on her way to the Bradbury Building and her meeting with Sebastian. Another appears as Deckard exits his sedan on the way to J.F. Sebastian's apartment.

I wondered how many plates were made by the prop department. To be truthful, I don't know. Perhaps with the help of fans we can track down other plates not identified in this article.

(Note the license plate
mounted upside-down.)

As I started to compile a list of known plates, my thoughts were that all the passenger vehicles, except the flying spinner, had plates. We know that there were 25 Winfield vehicles consisting of eight sub-compacts (coupes), four taxis, six sedans, and also the seven retro-fitted automobiles. So there could possibly be 32 plates, only a fraction of which have surfaced. But unless I track down the prop man who made the plates I will not know for sure. Perhaps only the sedans had plates. I'm sure Ridley Scott would have wanted all the passenger vehicles to have plates for realism.

What you see in this article are the plates that I have been able to locate through lengthy investigation. Any information regarding these plates would be appreciated.

This is the plate from Deckard's sedan.
I have been unable to locate this plate or confirm if it even still exists.

Good shot of Police car with plate 995 from the film.

This is a great production shot of Deckard's sedan in front of the Million Dollar Theater during filming. You can see the rear license plate above the left taillight.

This production pic of a Metrokab shows a license plate. This was a feature that detail-minded Ridley Scott was obviously determined to include.

A good pic of Deckard's Sedan with plate 7H5 from the film.

Special thanks to Ben Mund and Phil Steinschneider for help with the photos.
